Welcome to my Blog. I’ll be updating this blog with my adventures in storytelling. Check back often to see where I’ve been and what I’ve been up to.
On Wednesday March 2, I was invited to tell my stories at the Middle School in Ellerbe, NC. This was Dr. Seuss day for the younger kids and National Reading and Storytelling Week for the older kids. There were somewhere between 250 and 300 middle schoolers in the auditorium. We had a BLAST! I told the kids a lot about the history of storytelling, how the people in the NC mountains still tell Jack tales and Grandfather tales, which had originated in Europe and were brought over as people came to America. Then I asked how many of them had ever been to the State Fair at Raleigh. Most of them raised their hands and I began to tell them the stories about going to the State Fair with the FFA. This story was based on my trips to the Fair while I was in high school. Parts of this story tell about going to see the hairless dog, the geese that overturned the canoe, and sweet milk and Mt. Olive dill pickles. I told several funny fishing stories about Ol’ Whiskers, the biggest catfish in the Pee Dee River, and the Kickiboo Joy Juice and how I improvised when I ran out of fish bait. I finished up with a story of a special dog I once owned called Ol’ Shag. This story will make you laugh and you might even shed a tear.
I try to choose age-appropriate tales for my audience. I also include sound effects and animalizations to connect with my audience. So if you need a good laugh or just to expand your listening skills, send me an email or call and I’ll get back with you.
P.S. Folks, please support storytelling events and your local storyteller. This is one art form we don’t want to lose.
